Rendering Over Hebel PowerPanelXL

Hebel PowerPanelXL is a reinforced autoclaved aerated concrete wall panel from CSR Hebel. It is fixed to the frame and then coated. The finish is what the owner sees, but the work underneath decides how long it lasts.

This guide covers the coating side of a PowerPanelXL wall.

Follow the current CSR literature

CSR Hebel publishes technical literature for PowerPanelXL. It covers fixing, joints, control joints and suitable coating systems. Check you are working from the current version, because details change over time.

Using a coating system that CSR lists as suitable keeps the wall consistent with the manufacturer's documentation.

Panel joints come first

Before any coating, the panel joints have to be right. Joints should be filled and finished as the literature requires, flush with the panel face. Proud or sunken joints show through the finish, especially on smooth textures.

We check every joint before the first coat. It is far easier to fix a joint than a finished wall.

Control joints

PowerPanelXL walls need control joints where the literature requires them. They let the wall move without cracking the coating. Joints must carry through the coating system, not be rendered over.

Positions should be on the drawings. We confirm them with the builder before work starts.

Surface preparation

AAC panels can be dusty on the surface after cutting and handling. Dust stops coatings bonding properly. The panel surface should be clean, dry and sound before the coating system goes on.

Any chips or damage from handling should be repaired with the right patching material first.

The coating system

A suitable coating system for AAC is made to handle the panel's surface and movement. It usually involves more than one coat. The system documents set the order, the thickness and the curing times.

Paint alone is not a substitute for a proper coating system on an external AAC wall.

Openings and edges

Windows, doors and slab edges are where water tries to get in. Flashings and sealants have to be installed correctly before coating. Coating over a poor detail does not fix it.

Dark colours on AAC walls

Very dark colours make a wall much hotter in direct sun. On AAC walls, that heat adds to movement at the joints. Some coating systems set limits on how dark a colour can be.

Check the coating documentation before a dark colour is approved. If the client wants a dark finish, talk through the options early.

Weather and curing

Coatings should not go on in rain, on very hot walls or in strong wind. Each coat needs its curing time. On Queensland summer days, we plan the sunny elevations for cooler parts of the day.
