Hebel Panels or Brick Veneer on Gold Coast New Builds

Brick veneer has been the default wall on Queensland homes for decades. Hebel panels offer a different route to a solid feeling wall with a rendered finish. Neither is right for every home.

Here is how they compare in practice for builders on the Gold Coast.

The look

Face brick gives a traditional, textured look with no coating needed. Rendered brick gives a smooth or textured coloured finish but adds a render trade.

Hebel is always coated. The finished wall looks like render, so it suits contemporary designs with clean lines and flat colour.

How each wall goes up

Brick veneer is laid by bricklayers, course by course, with mortar joints. Hebel panels are fixed to the frame as large units, then the joints are finished and the wall is coated.

The difference in trades matters. Brick veneer needs bricklayers, and render if a rendered look is wanted. Hebel needs a panel installer and a coating applicator. Render King does both on Hebel jobs, so one subcontractor covers the wall from panel to finish.

Programme

The time each wall takes depends on the design, the weather and trade availability. Panel systems can reduce the number of separate steps on a wall. Ask each trade for realistic durations on your actual house type rather than general claims.

Comparing cost

Compare the cost of the whole finished wall, not one material. For brick veneer, include the bricks, the laying, and render and paint if a rendered look is wanted. For Hebel, include the panels, installation, joints and the coating system.

Scaffold time, waste and site access add up on both. Get quotes for the same house type on the same site so the numbers are fair.

Weight and structure

Hebel is a lightweight masonry material compared with brick. Structural requirements for both walls come from the engineer and the system documentation. Do not assume one can simply replace the other on existing drawings.

Detailing and joints

Brick veneer has its own detailing at openings, weep holes and articulation joints. Hebel walls need panel joints, control joints and careful detailing at openings and slab edges. Poor detailing causes problems in either system.

Performance

Thermal and acoustic results depend on the full wall build up, not just the outer skin. For figures, use the CSR Hebel technical literature and the energy efficiency assessment for your design. Avoid choosing on broad claims.

Maintenance

Face brick needs little maintenance. Coated walls need occasional cleaning and, over many years, recoating. Owners should know this at handover.
